WE have recently heard of the death on August 28 [2020] of William “Bill” Payne, former Daily Record wire room manager. He was 92, and is survived by his wife Chris and daughter Patty.
Bill started work for the Daily Record & Sunday Mail in Hope Street, Glasgow on September 19, 1955. He worked in the wire room and was later an FOC. After moving to Anderson Quay he was appointed wire room deputy manager, then became manager.
Bill’s daughter Patty movingly remembered her dad, saying: “My dad was amazing. He always looked great. He was a Record man through and through. He retired in 1988 after 33 years’ service. He always said he had a great job, and worked beside great guys who were also his friends. The only papers he would read were the Daily Record and Sunday Mail! He was much loved and is sadly missed.”
