MAURICE CARDEN, who worked at MGN for more than 25 years, principally in building services, died peacefully on June 25 , aged 93. His son Ian has sent us this tribute:
Born in 1929, Maurice did his national service as a carpenter in the RAF.
He lived in Ashtead, Surrey, where he met his wife Ruth, and was a great family man. He and Ruth had three children, Paula, Janet and me. Maurice and Ruth had recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Maurice’s other passions were his snooker and his dancing.
He captained the Ashtead Snooker Team in the Oxshott & District Snooker League, where he and his members won the 1st Division League many, many times.
He also built, with help from me, a snooker room at the end of the garden in just one year. When it was finished, it looked like a glorious summerhouse, and contained a full-size snooker table and workshop.
Maurice and his wife Ruth danced in a competition in Malta. I always remember him telling us how hard the floors were in Malta, not like our wonderful sprung wooden dancing floors in England!
He leaves widow Ruth, three children, nine grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
