John Stubbs

Posted: January 9th, 2023

FORMER Sporting Life reporter JOHN STUBBS passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, January 6 [2023]. John had suffered ill health for a while and had moved into a new nursing home only a couple of days before he died.

John’s funeral is at 11.30am on Wednesday, February 1, at St Mary Church, The Street, Frensham, Surrey GU10 3EA, followed by a wake at the Ball & Wicket pub in Farnham GU10 4LA. The family requests: No black at all; no flowers; donations to RSPCA. Attendees are asked to confirm via the Contact Us page above.

‘Stubbo’ will best known to the paper’s outside reporting staff, but he began as a writer, and was Augur (horseracing tipster) for many years before handing over to George Ross. John then went on the road as one of the main starting price reporters. This obviously included a great deal of travelling, and along the way he gathered countless stories which he’d relate to colleagues. Former Life chief reporter and colleague Geoff Lester remembers John’s great sense of humour.
