A sad farewell
John Flint, former night news editor of the Daily Mirror in Manchester has died after a long illness at the aged 65. He leaves a widow Manik and two children, Nichole and James.
He was a highly respected newspapermen and had spent the last 12 years of his service with the Daily Mirror, which ended with the Maxwell cuts, in charge of the night newsgathering operation from Withy Grove. Bill Freeman, formerly News Editor of the Daily Mirror and Northern Editor of the Sunday Mirror said: “He was a first class journalist and friend and respected by all who knew him. One hopes there are more like him coming into newspapers”.
Apart from his news desk work he took on the Mirror’s highly successful visit of Pope Paul to Manchester, and was involved in coverage of the Moors’ murderers Brady and Hindley through to their trial at Chester Assizes. He led a team of reporters in Belfast covering the Bloody Sunday riots and spent time in Scotland when the Mirror intensified coverage there.
When he left the Mirror John became News Editor of the newly published North West Times, then moved on to a similar appointment at the Gloucestershire Echo in Cheltenham where he spent six years. He returned to Manchester in 1995 to join business magazine publisher Newsco and wrote a column. And even when he visited his brother in Australia last December he kept his column deadline despite his illness.
John’s career started on the Wythenshawe Recorder in 1958 moving onto the Manchester Evening News after two years National Service with the army in Hong Kong.
He and Manik had been married 35 years and have three grandchildren. Many of his former colleagues and friends filled the Macclesfield Crematorium to say goodbye to a very popular man.
