WE have belatedly learned that GEORGE THAW, former Daily Mirror literary editor, feature writer, Old Codger and author, died on June 7 [2022], aged 85.
His funeral notice read, in part: “George, aged 85 years, on 7th June in Sheffield, formerly of Groton, Suffolk. Retired Journalist at the Daily Mirror. Beloved husband of Phyllis and much loved father of Sarah, George and Daniel, and a very dear grandfather.”
George’s former colleague (and now MGNPS trustee director) Stephanie Kerstein writes: “Back in 1990, the then literary editor of the Daily Mirror, George Thaw, showed me a book and said: “Read the first line and you’ll be hooked. You’ll love this, it’s Sam Spade in Ancient Rome.
“The book he showed me – George often showed people books, he never loaned them – was The Silver Pigs by an author I had never heard of, Lindsey Davis. George was right about my being hooked from the first line though, and thanks to him I began to follow the adventures of Marcus Didius Falco, if not historically the first, certainly one of the funniest and most humane private eyes ever to slap a sandalled foot on a mean street.”
