Donald McMaster

Posted: October 25th, 2023

DONALD MCMASTER, a process worker at SDR&SM, died on August 18 [2023], at the grand age of 102. (Members may remember Donald who featured on this website on his 100th birthday in May 2021, see picture, right, and in January, 2019 on his 71st wedding anniversary.)

Donald retired from the Record & Mail in 1986 having worked in the 67 Hope Street building and at Anderston Quay. He served in the RAF during the War and was posted to India.

Before the War he was involved in entertaining troops in army camps. He got into acting and being an extra when he saw filming taking place on his way home from work, and was smitten. He applied for an Equity card and got an agent.

After retirement, Donald continued to enjoy his successful career as one of Britain’s most prolific TV and film extras, appearing in dramas such as Taggart, Still Game, High Road, Chewin’ the Fat, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and River City.

The sad news of Donald’s passing came from his son Ken, a former Daily Record sub-editor, who said: “It was strange to watch a programme on TV when dad would suddenly pop up.” He addded: “My mum, Georgina, died three months before Dad, in May, 2023. She was 97.”
Condolences to the family.
With thanks to Malcolm Speed.
