Roy White – Honorary committee member

Posted: November 7th, 2019

ROY WHITE started in 1956 at Hulton Press as a clerk. When Odhams took the company over in 1959 Hultons changed its name to Longacre Press. I was taken by Mr Fred Bartrum (who was from Odhams) to be his assistant. It was Mr Bartrum who got me to study for my accountants’ exams – I qualified In 1970. Mr Bartrum moved to Odhams Printing in 1960 and left me in charge of the management accounts.

In 1966 I was asked by Mr LK Guest to join him at IPC. When IPC was broken up in 1972 I joined Mirror Group Newspapers as Assistant Management Accountant under Ken Wright. In 1974 I was made Financial Accountant reporting to Alan Thompson. When Maxwell arrived in 1984 I had just been promoted to Treasurer of Mirror Group Newspapers. I met Maxwell on his first day and told him and he said: “I like you, you look honest.” I stayed as treasurer for the next four years when I chose redundancy.
